Sashiko is a form of traditional Japanese embroidery or stitching that originated in rural Japan. The word sashiko means “little stabs” reflecting the stitching technique that uses small running stitches to create geometric patterns on fabric. Traditional sashiko is often stitched with white thread on indigo fabrics, but students will create three animal sashiko-inspired squares to explore modern variations of the traditional stitches using multiple colors. Your completed squares can be finished into coasters, quilt blocks, decorative pockets, or framed as a piece of embroidered art.

“As a fiber artist, I’m always looking for new ways to stitch. This class caught my eye because it is based on a historical form of Japanese stitchwork that was originally used to mend clothing. The instructor, Becca Rahn, is new to WBCA—go check out her website at beckarahn.com!”
