“Classic, Vibrant, and Painterly Still Lifes” explores the harmony between light and shadow, inspired by the chiaroscuro style. Chiaroscuro is an artistic technique that uses contrasts of light and shade to create the illusion of three-dimensional form and depth. Each piece brings a sense of depth and timeless elegance to everyday subjects, capturing their beauty with a lively yet refined touch.
Karen Chan is a Minnesota-based oil painter specializing in still life works that celebrate the beauty of everyday objects. Working primarily in the tradition of chiaroscuro, her paintings feature dark, atmospheric backgrounds with striking highlights that bring rustic vessels, fresh fruits, and floral arrangements vividly to life. Her work blends classical influences with a contemporary sensibility, inviting viewers to pause and reflect through rich color, dramatic lighting, and confident, expressive brushwork.
A self-taught artist committed to lifelong learning, Karen continues to refine her skills through ongoing study and practice. She draws inspiration from old masters such as Emil Carlsen and Frans Mortelmans, whose sensitivity to light, texture, and mood deeply influence her artistic voice.
Karen teaches ‘Beginner’s Still Life Oil Painting’ at White Bear Center for the Arts and leads workshops in both oil and acrylic painting for private groups, corporate events, and local libraries. She is passionate about making fine art approachable for all skill levels, offering step-by-step guidance that empowers both beginners and experienced painters to grow their creative confidence.
Karen also accepts commissions, creating personalized oil paintings that capture meaningful stories and timeless beauty.
