Hand Sewing Leather 101 – Small Goods

This entry level class is designed to introduce the classic techniques of hand-sewing with leather. Students can choose from projects that demonstrate the basics of working with leather including cutting, punching, hand sewing, riveting, snap setting, finishing and care. No previous experience with any type of craft or sewing is required. Students will be able to choose from a wide assortment of projects and leather at the beginning of class, including: clutches, belts, coin purses, wallets, Fieldnote covers, phone cases, keychains, sunglass cases and more. Hand Sewing Leather 201 – Tote Bag and Laptop Case

Time: Saturday, May 11, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

This advanced leather-working class will build on your sewing skills, allowing students to create a larger, more complex project. Students will work from custom patterns while being guided through the basics of leather design and construction  including the skills necessary to design their own goods. Project options include a tote bag, cross body purse, 13” laptop case or 15” laptop case. You will be required to choose your project at signup but a variety of leather choices for each project will be available at the beginning of class. Previous hand-sewing (saddle stitch) experience is strongly recommended. While the basics will be covered, the more experience you have, the happier you will be with you finished project. Rosa Mystica

In this class you will create welded a steel rose. You will learn hands-on cutting, grinding, sanding and welding steel. Safety first: Wear jeans, closed toe leather shoes, a long sleeved cotton shirt, hair tie, and insulated leather gloves. You will be cutting 3 metal discs with a hand shear into rose petals, cutting a steel rod with an angle grinder for your stem and sanding it all with an angle grinder or pad sander. The discs will be welded to the steel rod and once cooled the steel petals will be systematically bent and pounded with hand tools into a rose that will always bloom.

Tin Thread Necklace

Date/Time: Friday, March 29, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Using tin thread we’ll learn how to make 5 strand braids and then use the braid to create a necklace! Students can choose the necklace length and thread width. Closures are made with reindeer leather and a choice of either antler duffle button and antler ring or stone donut in a variety of color choices. Bring from home: Small sharp scissors
