Layer by Layer
Instructor: Kip O’Krongly
Using slab-building techniques as a starting point, this one-day hands-on workshop will begin with constructing handbuilt ceramic forms to serve as three-dimensional clay canvases. Earthenware plates and tiles will serve as a foundation for building unique narrative layers with intricate stencils, colored slips, sgraffito decoration, and latex resist. Kip will also demonstrate methods for blending underglazes to achieve vibrant backgrounds (no airbrush needed!) and give tips for transferring imagery from sketches to pots.
During this jam-packed workshop you’ll learn things like:
- How to handbuild plates with minimal clay waste
- Incorporating a hand extruder into your building process
- Ways to use templates to construct forms and for imagery development
- Methods and tools for finely detailed sgraffito drawing
- Using latex resist as a surface decoration tool (without ruining your brushes!)
- A snazzy two-handed handle-pulling technique
- How to blend underglazes and slips to achieve beautiful ombre backgrounds
- Using a digital cutter to create unique stencils
Join Kip as she gives you the keys to pairing handbuilt pots, sgraffito, stencils, and color to create depth-filled graphic surfaces all your own!
