Economic stimulus passed by congress includes more provisions for charitable giving:
- Up to $300 in charitable giving (that’s $25 a month) can be deducted “above the line” on Federal income tax – $600 for joint filers.
- Total maximum charitable deduction increased from 60% to 100% of Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) – but only to qualified public charities (nonprofits) like White Bear Center for the Arts.
- Corporations may deduct up to 25% of income from charitable giving, up from 10%. Click here for information on WBCA’s business sponsor program.
- While not new, consider that excess charitable contributions may be carried forward up to 5 years.

Gifts of Stock
If you would like to make a stock donation, please call 651.407.0597 and we will provide all necessary information so you can donate to our account.
Note: After you make a stock gift, please let us know and provide the date, type of stock, and number of shares, so we can properly credit you. Our broker does not always have the donor name to go with the donation.
IRA Designations and your RMD
For those 70.5 and up, you may designate WBCA to receive all or part of your IRA’s Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), up to $100,000 annually. This strategy avoids increasing your taxable income (AGI) and may benefit you in other ways. Ask assistance from your financial adviser. More reading from Fidelity and Market Watch.
Charitable Giving Tax Strategies
Under new tax legislation, more donors are exploring charitable gift vehicles to defray and avoid large tax bills. You may find it advantageous to “clump” your larger charitable gifts into one itemized tax year, and rotate that with one or more years at the new higher standard minimum deduction ($12,000 or $24,000 for couples).
Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs)
DAFs are the fastest growing charitable giving instrument, increasing in popularity due to their flexibility and tax advantages. Locally, you can find more resources at the Greater White Bear Lake Community Foundation.
DAFs require no annual minimum payout, unlike a private/family foundation. Setting up a DAF is advantageous in a windfall year, helping you avoid hefty taxes on appreciated gains (stocks, real estate, artwork), and allowing you to carry the charitable deduction of establishing the DAF forward up to five years. Plus, your DAF may continue to grow once established, increasing your total charitable giving capacity. Learn more at the National Philanthropic Trust, as well as at the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation and Minneapolis Foundation.
