Finding success in working with watercolor includes learning the basics. Sylvia will describe in detail the materials used in watercolor paintings and how the water and pigment work together on the paper. The class also involves learning brush techniques, mixing colors, graying colors or knocking down the intensity, methods for producing textures, doing value studies, and discussing what makes a good composition. Use a viewfinder to choose an eye-catching composition that can be painted in a larger abstract version, illustrating high, medium, and low key value. Curious? Come explore the endless possibilities in clay! Although this course is self-guided, each class will start with a short demonstration or show- and-tell followed by time to work on individual projects: throwing techniques, hand-building, surface decoration and form resolution, etc. Zac will work with students one-on-one to discuss projects and troubleshoot conceptual and construction issues. Over the course of the quarter, you will build your ceramics vocabulary and develop work that is unique to you. All levels are welcome. Materials are included.

Even if you’ve never drawn a face before, this class will give you a solid approach to drawing faces. If you have, there are lots of tips and details to help you capture your subject better. This workshop emphasizes placing and drawing the features of the face accurately, including:
• How to analyze light and shadow, and create a light effect.
• How to map the features of the face.
• Common errors in portrait drawing.
Both the morning and afternoon sessions will include demos covering the principles of drawing a face and hands-on experience drawing from sculptor’s casts and a live model.

Wheat Weaving: Scandinavian Holiday Ornaments

Come learn about the ancient craft of wheat weaving as it is done in Europe and Scandinavia, and make several Scandinavian holiday ornaments for your house or tree. After cleaning and preparing wheat, you will learn to tie it and will leave with a goat and a tomte or two (and maybe a simple plaited ornament), and wheat to take home for more weaving there.
Bring from home:
An old pair of scissors and an old towel
Paper bag for wheat trimmings
Any special ribbons (1/4” or 1/2”) you might like
to use
Pencil, paper for keeping track of notes
Aprons recommended
Snack or bag lunch for our break-optional.
