Fred Livesay carved his first spoon at age seven and has never stopped. He began teaching traditional Scandinavian crafts at age 17 for the Concordia language camps in northern Minnesota. Earlier, at the age of 14 he began a formal seven-year carriage and wheelwright apprenticeship, after which, he attended the University of Minnesota where he switched majors for times before settling on and receiving a B. A. in Art History in 1989. In 1992, Fred was granted his M. A. from the Museum Studies Program at Cooperstown, N. Y. Fred is a founding instructor of North House Folk School, teaches all over the upper Midwest and has studied and taught regularly in Sweden and England. Fred currently resides in St. Paul, MN. and after 45 years, has never lost his passion for carving usable ‘sexy’ spoons.
