
The WBCA is proud to sponsor this annual contest giving high school students the opportunity to express their voices creatively and to be recognized for their efforts. Students in grades 9-12 in the White Bear and Mahtomedi school districts (as well as other students who live in these geographic areas) are invited to enter original writing in the following categories: poetry, essay,
short story and one-act play. Submissions will be judged in two age categories: grades 9-10 and grades 11-12.

2006 WriteNow! Writer's Contest
There were over 170 entries submitted in 2006 in categories that included poetry, essay, short story and one-act play." The judges were Julie Klassen, short story; Brian Lutterman, short story; Mary Kolles, poetry; Anne Picard, poetry; Maiya Willets, essay and one-act play; Claudia Haas, one-act play; Sue Narayan, essay; Mark Nicklawske, essay; Marilyn Sklar, one-act play;
Jane Scott, one-act play; David LaRochelle, short story; and Dylan Garcia-Wahl.
The WBCA held an Award Ceremony and readings by the winners at the White Bear Lake High School South Campus Theatre in White Bear Lake. Congratulations to all the students who submitted entries in 2006!
The Board and Staff of the WBCA wish to thank Missy Ward and Marilyn Sklar for co-chairing the event, along with all of the students, teachers, judges, volunteers and financial contributors who made this program possible. A special thank you to the Mahtomedi and White Bear Lake High School’s for co-sponsoring this event and the White Bear Lake High School for making the South Campus

POETRY
1 poem per page, up to 3 poems per person.
ESSAY
Minimum 500 words; maximum 1,000 words. Note word count at end of essay.
SHORT STORY
Minimum 500 words; maximum 1,000 words. Note word count at end of story.
ONE-ACT PLAY
No word requirement.
GUIDELINES
• Make three copies of each entry. All entries must be typed.
• Do not place your name or address on your entry.
• Complete and attach an Entry Form to each entry. Include your grade (9, 10, 11, 12) on each Entry Form. Entry Forms are also available from participating English teachers.
• Submit entries to your participating English teacher or to the White Bear Center for the Arts, 2228 4th Street, White Bear Lake, MN 55110
PLAGIARISM
The act of appropriating the literary composition of another author, or excerpts, ideas, or passages therefrom, and passing the material off as one's own creation. When submitting essays, poetry, short stories or one-act plays, students must produce writing which is original, and in fiction, students should develop original plot and character development . All entries should be produced
by the person submitting the entries. Any entries found to contain plagiarism will be disqualified from the competition.
