• Busephalus by Kelly Ludeking
Busephalus was the name of the wild horse tamed by Alexander the Great. It is said that Alexander was only 12 years old when he noticed that the “untamable” wild horse was shying away from his own shadow. Alexander gently led the horse into the sun so that his shadow was behind him, thus taming the horse that he eventually rode. Kelly Ludeking, a White Bear artist who works in iron, spent more than 6 months looking for just the right pieces to create this magnificent artwork. The sculpture stands eight feet tall and weighs over 600 lbs. Kelly originally brought Bucephalus to have on display during ArtWatch. It looks so perfect out front and draws so much attention to the art center. If you haven’t already, stop by and see Bucephalus! ( click photo to see a larger image.)

• Bob Straube Memorial Scholarship Fund
In Memory of Bob Straube, 1938-2006
The WBCA and the area art community is deeply saddened by the loss of Bob Straube. Bob was an instructor and gifted artist. He taught Oil Painting and instructional demonstrations for the White Bear Center for the Arts. In 2005 he served as a judge for our Northern Lights Juried Art Show and participated as a painter in our first Open Canvas Art Event. He was known for mesmerizing an audience while he painted, gradually revealing the image with a flick of color here, and a touch of white there. You know an artist is a master of their medium when it feels like you are witnessing magic, and that’s how people felt when they watched Bob paint! We will miss Bob’s wonderful sense of humor, his warmth, his art, and most of all, the twinkle in his eye.
The White Bear Center for the Arts is establishing the Bob Straube Memorial Scholarship Fund in his honor. Money donated to this fund will help provide tuition fees for students of all ages in need of financial assistance to take art classes at the center. We feel this is one way to keep Bob’s love for art and teaching alive. This is the WBCA’s first Memorial Scholarship fund to be established. For more information please contact Suzi Hudson, Executive Director at the WBCA, 651-407-0597.
